Longwood and Welfare Grants Awarded
to Safe Haven for Building Construction
Released to News
Media August 2009
The first No-Kill animal sanctuary for Sussex County
took another giant step forward recently with the receipt of two major grants to be used for construction of their new LEED-certified
facility. Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary
of Sussex County already owns and has received permits to build on a 14-acre site for the new animal sanctuary on Shingle
Point Road, between Georgetown and Milton, DE. The latest grants were awarded by the Longwood Foundation and the Welfare Foundation
of Wilmington, DE.
“With these grants, we are looking to begin construction by fall of 2009,” said
Hal Dukes, Esq., chair of Safe Haven. “We are most appreciative of the confidence shown in us by the Longwood and Welfare
Foundations.”
Once it is fully operational, the sanctuary will receive, care for and help adopt as many as
2,000 cats and dogs per year, while providing free or low cost spay and neuter service to thousands more Sussex County animals.
“Proactive spay and neutering, combined with adoption, are already helping to decrease the number of homeless animals
in our region,” said Anne Gryczon, executive director. Gryczon noted that Safe Haven has been carrying out spay and
neutering services in various Sussex County communities for the past year. When construction on the new energy efficient facility begins later this year, the
Safe Haven board of directors will launch a capital campaign to secure the balance of the funding needed for both construction
and start-up operating costs
Hal Dukes said that, with these latest grants, one-third of the estimated $3.5 million
facility cost has now been raised or pledged, in addition to more than $1 million generated in prior years, which enabled
the purchase and improvements made to the Safe Haven site.
If you are interested in participating in the Safe
Haven campaign, please contact Anne Gryczon at 302-519-4317.
